A team using NASA's James Webb Space Telescope identified a previously unknown moon orbiting Uranus, expanding the planet's known satellite family to 29.
NASA said the detection came from Webb NIRCam observations taken on 2 February 2025. The object was faint enough to have escaped earlier observations, including Voyager 2's 1986 flyby.
The discovery shows how Webb's infrared sensitivity can revise the inventory of nearby planetary systems, not only observe the distant universe.
NASA cautioned that the finding was science in progress and had not yet completed peer review.
