Vitamin B12 Compound Shows Early Signal Against Glioblastoma

A new Oncoscience study explored nitrosylcobalamin, a modified vitamin B12 compound that releases nitric oxide, as a possible way to reach glioblastoma tumors behind the blood-brain barrier.

The researchers reported that the compound crossed the blood-brain barrier in animal studies and accumulated preferentially in brain tumor tissue. They also found synergy with temozolomide and TRAIL in human glioblastoma cell-line experiments.

The appeal is delivery. Glioblastoma treatment is limited not only by tumor biology but by the difficulty of getting useful drug concentrations into the brain without unacceptable toxicity.
