Texas enacted the Texas Responsible Artificial Intelligence Governance Act in June 2025, a state-level AI law that legal analyses described as taking effect on 1 January 2026.

The law was reported to prohibit certain harmful AI uses, including systems used for manipulation, discrimination, unlawful deepfakes or interference with constitutional rights, while also creating governance infrastructure such as a sandbox and advisory council.

The industry point is fragmentation. AI companies selling across the United States increasingly need to monitor state laws, not just federal agencies or European regulation.

Why It Matters

State AI laws can shape product design, risk reviews and customer contracts even when there is no comprehensive U.S. federal AI statute.
