OpenAI Models Arrive on AWS as Enterprise AI Competition Shifts to Distribution

OpenAI's frontier models and Codex are now available through Amazon Web Services, giving companies another route to deploy the technology within existing cloud controls.

OpenAI has made its frontier models and Codex generally available through Amazon Web Services, expanding beyond direct access to OpenAI's own products and infrastructure partnerships.

Companies can use OpenAI models through Amazon Bedrock, AWS's managed service for building applications with foundation models. Codex, OpenAI's software-engineering agent, is also available within the AWS environment.

For enterprises, the distribution channel matters almost as much as model performance. Large organizations rarely deploy a new AI system solely because it performs well in a demonstration. They must also satisfy security reviews, procurement rules, identity controls, regional requirements, billing procedures and internal governance.

AWS already sits inside those processes for many companies. Offering OpenAI through Bedrock can reduce the organizational work needed to move from experimentation to production, particularly for customers that have standardized their cloud operations around Amazon.

The agreement also illustrates how fluid the AI market has become. Cloud providers increasingly offer models developed by companies that may compete with their own AI products. At the same time, model developers seek access to customers across multiple infrastructure platforms instead of depending on a single route to market.

OpenAI says the services are available in both commercial AWS regions and GovCloud. It also plans to make specialized cyber capabilities available through AWS in the future, although the company has not announced complete availability details.

Customer statements in the launch announcement included Amgen and Autodesk, both of which emphasized the appeal of using frontier models within established governance and operational frameworks.
