NHS England Prepares One of Healthcare's Largest Copilot Rollouts

NHS England has announced a major rollout of Microsoft 365 Copilot across healthcare services, saying 505,000 clinicians and support staff will receive access by October 2026.
The deployment follows a trial involving more than 30,000 NHS workers across 90 NHS organisations. NHS England says the trial found AI-powered administrative support saved an average of 43 minutes per staff member per day, equivalent to more than 5 weeks per person annually.
The expected use cases are deliberately administrative rather than diagnostic: drafting patient letters, supporting discharge processes, analysing service data, building rotas, preparing meeting minutes and helping HR, finance, procurement and management teams create routine documents and briefings.
Each NHS trust is expected to receive a central allocation of licences based on organisational headcount, typically starting at around 2,000 Microsoft 365 Copilot licences. NHS England frames the programme as a productivity measure designed to free clinicians and support staff from paperwork so more time can be spent on patient care.
