Google introduced Gemma 4 on 2 April, calling it its most capable open model family to date and positioning it for advanced reasoning, agentic workflows and local-first development.

The company said Gemma had passed 400 million downloads since the first generation and pointed to more than 100,000 community variants. That installed base is the strategic reason open models matter: they create habits, tooling and developer loyalty outside a single hosted API.
