City of Hope researchers, working with UCLA scientists, reported a biological mechanism that may help explain why belly fat tends to increase with age even when body weight does not change dramatically.
The team identified age-specific committed preadipocytes, a newly described stem-cell population that appears in aging fat tissue and is especially effective at generating new fat cells. Single-cell RNA sequencing and mouse transplantation experiments pointed to a stronger fat-making program in older progenitor cells.
The work also highlighted leukemia inhibitory factor receptor signaling as a possible control pathway. Human tissue analysis found similar cells in middle-aged samples, making the finding more relevant than a mouse-only observation.
