The history of technology is also a history of intimacy. Tools began outside the body: stone, plough, wheel, loom, engine, keyboard. Then they moved closer: spectacles, pacemakers, cochlear implants, insulin pumps and smartphones carried against the skin. Brain-computer interfaces cross another threshold. They touch the organ through which a person experiences intention.
Neuralink is often discussed through the language of innovation: paralysis, communication, cursor control, restored agency. That promise matters. For a person who cannot move or speak, a reliable implant can be liberation rather than intrusion. The same device that frightens society in the abstract may give a patient back a practical form of freedom.
But medicine has always carried a double edge. The hospital is a place of care, yet also of classification, surveillance and institutional power. Psychiatry, disability policy and public health have all shown that societies can confuse treatment with control. A brain implant intensifies the old problem because the data is not only about the body; it is about neural activity linked to attention, intention, movement and possibly emotion.
The political question is sovereignty. Liberal societies imagine the individual as a self-owning agent who can consent, refuse, speak, vote, buy and withdraw. But what happens when a commercial platform mediates the signals by which a person communicates or acts? What happens if software updates, subscription terms, device failures or data policies become conditions of agency?
Economically, neurotechnology may follow the familiar platform pattern. The first use case is therapeutic and narrow. The second is convenience. The third is optimization. Markets will search for adjacent uses: productivity, gaming, attention training, military performance, education and emotion tracking. The line between restoration and enhancement will be drawn by insurers, employers, regulators, investors and users under pressure.
Manipulation does not require cinematic mind control. Human beings are already manipulated by feeds, advertisements, interface design and social ranking systems. A neural interface could make manipulation more intimate if it gives systems feedback about fatigue, attention, impulse or frustration. The danger is not that a chip instantly erases free will. It is that feedback loops become harder to see and harder to refuse.
A humane politics of neurotechnology would begin from the patient, not the market. It would treat neural data as a special category, protect non-use, require strong rights to explanation where possible, and separate therapeutic necessity from commercial pressure.
