NHS Moves AI Chest X-Ray Tools From Pilot to National Rollout

The UK government has announced almost £30 million in funding for AI and digital technologies across the NHS, with the largest share aimed at scaling chest X-ray tools that support radiologists in identifying abnormalities more quickly.

According to the Department of Health and Social Care, £20 million will support rollout of the chest X-ray technology to every NHS trust in England by 2029. The technology is already available in about half of NHS trusts and has helped more than 4 million patients receive a faster lung cancer diagnosis or all-clear.

The government says early data shows the tools can help radiologists analyse scans in an average of 4 days, compared with 8 days for the most complex cases previously. The stated aim is to reduce diagnostic delays and help more patients begin treatment within the 62-day cancer waiting time standard after GP referral.

A further £8.1 million, through the National Institute for Health and Care Research, will support 6 AI and digital technology pilots at 12 NHS trusts and one GP partnership across England and Scotland. The projects will involve CT scans, ECGs, X-rays, digital therapy and prioritisation of urgent cases, with target areas including heart failure, stroke, lung cancer, lung infections and tic disorders.

The important point is not that AI is replacing radiologists. The government's own announcement repeatedly frames the tools as support for clinicians, and the Royal College of Radiologists said evidence-based, clinician-led implementation will be central as the rollout expands.
